Terre Haute Police Officer shot and killed in the line of duty this afternoon

A law enforcement officer from the Terre Haute Police Department was shot and killed in the line of duty earlier this afternoon, Wednesday, July 7, in Terre Haute. Multiple first responders and officers from several agencies responded to an area on South First Street at a federal office or building around 2 p.m. The public information officer for THPD has confirmed the officer is deceased but no other information about the officer’s name or circumstances around the incident have been released - more information is expected to be released later today. The suspect is a white man driving a gold or silver pickup truck with rear-end damage. The suspect is considered armed and dangerous. The Terre Haute Tribune Star reported officers appeared to be engaged with a suspect near Regional Hospital but that has not been otherwise confirmed. Anyone with information about the suspect or the incident is asked to call 911. Indiana State Police to have extra 4th of July patrols

Troopers from the Indiana State Police Posts around the state would like to encourage safe travels during this 4th of July holiday weekend.

To help ensure the safety of all motorists, the Indiana State Police will be participating in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) and DUIEP (Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Project) from July 1 to July 5. These are federally funded programs that allow extra troopers to patrol Hoosier highways during the upcoming holiday period.

Efforts will be focused on distracted drivers, impaired drivers, and drivers and passengers not buckled up. Last year throughout Indiana from July 1 through July 5, there were 2,345 crashes that resulted in 425 injuries and 13 fatalities.

UPDATE: SUSPECT IN CUSTODY..... Wanted: Suspect in aggravated assault with a baseball bat

UPDATE: The suspect in an assault with a baseball bat last summer, that left a Greene County man with serious injuries, is in custody. A warrant was issued a year ago for the arrest of Russell J. Lyttaker, now 41, but he fled the area and the state. Lyttaker then wound up in jail in Missouri and the Greene County Sheriff’s Department picked him up yesterday, Wednesday, June 30, and transported him back to Greene County to face charges of aggravated battery – assault posed a substantial risk of death, a Level 3 felony, and battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony. Lyttaker was booked into the Greene County Jail at 6:01 p.m. He is currently being held without bond. GCSD Det. David Elmore was the arresting officer……. EARLIER STORY A YEAR AGO: A warrant is out for the arrest of a 40-year-old male suspect from Denver accused of an assault with a baseball bat that left a Greene County man seriously injured with skull fractures, a brain bleed, a ruptured spleen, broken wrist and loss of hearing.
