Phillip Joe Yates, 58, of Coalmont, passed away peacefully at his home at 10:42 a.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. Born in Sullivan on December 20, 1967, Phillip was the son of Howard Yates and Ruth (Zellers) Sluder. He built a life centered on hard work, family, and the simple things that brought him joy.

Phillip spent much of his life working in landscaping, a field in which he took pride and found purpose. He began working at a young age with Allen Jones and later worked for Beech Creek and Metsker Nursery. His work reflected his appreciation for the outdoors and the satisfaction of making things grow and look their best.

More than anything, Phillip loved his family. He cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren, creating memories through everyday moments and family gatherings. He enjoyed mushroom hunting, camping, fishing, landscaping, and relaxing at home with a good movie. Phillip was happiest in the company of those he loved and in the familiar comforts of home.

He was a member of New Testament Baptist Church in Coalmont.

Phillip is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years, Julia M. (Michaels) Yates; his children, Tiffany (Aaron) Pearson, Joseph Yates, and Brianna (Justin Hadley) Yates; and his six grandchildren, Nathaniel Pearson, Andrew Pearson, Ariyah Yates, Maci Hadley, Benjamin Yates, and Everleigh Hadley. He is also survived by his brother, Lowell Yates; his sister, Teresa Keller; and his nieces, Arena Keller, Skylar Keller, and Ashley Norris.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Debbie Goble; and his brother, Steve Yates.

Phillip will be remembered for his hardworking nature, his love of the outdoors, and, above all, the love he shared with his family. His presence will be deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him.
