Donald R. Howard

Donald R. Howard, 93, of Bicknell, Indiana, died on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Valyrian Place in Greencastle, Indiana.  Donald was born on September 2, 1933, in Bonnie, Illinois, to Doyle and Hazel (Severs) Howard.

He worked hard all his life. He spent 30 years with Peabody Coal Company at the Hawthorne Mine and retired in 1993. He didn't slow down after that, though.  In retirement Donald found work he loved at fairs and festivals across the region, where he sold Southwest jewelry and other treasures. More than anything he enjoyed the art of the deal. Whether he was buying or selling, he liked the back-and-forth, the friendly haggling and the satisfaction of a good trade.

Donald and his beloved wife, Barbara, spent their winters in Texas and sometimes made trips across the border into Mexico. Those trips gave them memories they both treasured. At home Don took pride in a freshly mowed lawn, and he believed a good nap was one of life's simple pleasures. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan his whole life and stayed loyal to his team through every season.

People who knew Don will remember him as a kind and generous man who cared about the people around him.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bradley R. and Betty Jo Howard; three granddaughters, Brandee Farrington (Dan), Brooke Evens and Amber Howard; and five great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Donna Terrell, Glen Terrell, Estella Bays, Gilbert Buskirk and Kenneth Buskirk, and by his special step-granddaughter, Cheryl Noonan.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Rod Howard; and Barbara, his wife of 22 years.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, October 12, at Prairie Chapel Cemetery near Newberry. There will be no public visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Don's generous spirit by giving to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton, of Walton Funeral Service. Online condolences may be shared at www.welchcornett.com.
