Donald Ray "Don" Davenport
/Donald Ray "Don" Davenport, 74, of Linton, Indiana, passed away suddenly on the morning of November 2, 2026, from a broken heart following the loss of his beloved wife, Gloria. He was born on May 27, 1952, in Linton, to Ira Eldon "Dave" Davenport and Barbara Joan Weddle.
Don graduated from North Knox High School in 1970 and married Gloria Jean Hancock on June 1, 1971. Together, they shared 55 years of marriage before her passing on July 9, 2026.
Shortly after their wedding, Don and Gloria moved to Niles, Michigan, where he found steady work and trained as an electrician at Clark Electrical. He later worked as a machinist and fabricator at Bendix, joining the United Auto Workers and serving as a union steward from the late 1970s into the 1980s. After leaving Bendix, he worked for AMC, building Hummers for the government.
In the 1990s, Don took his career in a new direction, working in loss prevention as a store detective for retailers including Ames and Best Buy. He later joined Walmart, where he spent the final 20 years of his working life. Throughout his loss-prevention career, he caught hundreds of shoplifters across Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois. He also held positions as an electronics technician and risk prevention specialist. To many people he met along the way, he was simply known as "Patch."
Don loved tinkering with anything electronic or mechanical and had an inexplicable fondness for duct tape, baling wire, vinyl placemats, and zip ties. Resourceful and inventive, he had a special knack for fixing things and turning an unlikely assortment of parts into something useful. His "MacGyver" approach to problem-solving taught his daughters plenty of unconventional skills over the years. In his younger days, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, 4x4 vehicles, and living the "country-boy" life.
Don is survived by his daughters, Angel Mikusak (Paul) and Crystal Wadsworth, both of Linton; his grandchildren, Eric (Chris) of Oregon, Jeanette of New Mexico, and Devon (Jacqueline), Owen, Nik (Robyn), Abigal (Clayton), and Emma, all of Linton; and his great-grandchildren, Lena and Joe of Germany, Isabelle of New Mexico, and Olivia, Liam, Theo, and Violet, all of Indiana. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Ellen Hancock, and brother-in-law, Scott Hancock (Michelle), all of Linton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria; his parents; his grandparents, Charles and Anna Bethel and Leona "Texas" and Velma Davenport; and his brother-in-law, Bob Hancock.
The family extends a heartfelt thank-you to Southern Care Hospice; his favorite nurse, Aubrey; the nurses at Glenburn; Becky Herndon; and the gals at Linton Hearing Aid Services. Their patience, kindness, and compassionate care meant so much.
Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Friday, November 6, 2026, at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton.
Visitation will be held at the funeral home that morning from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service.
Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Linton.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Welch & Cornett Funeral Home of Walton Funeral Service, Inc.
