Man stumbling down Park Road arrested for pubic intoxication

A man from outside the county, who had warrants out for his arrest in two states other than Indiana, was jailed in Greene County after a Linton police officer found him walking, actually stumbling, down Park Road last Thursday night.

Steven Stoddard Engel, 40, New Castle, Ind., was arrested by Officer Alan Jackson of the Linton Police Department late last Thursday night, June 24.

Around 10:15 p.m. last Thursday, Officer Jackson was dispatched to an area on County Road 1100 West, also known as Park Road, near the softball field, about a person laying in the road wearing dark clothing.

Officer Jackson found the man, later identified as Steven Engel, and reported Engel was stumbling down the road, walking south in the southbound lane.

“As the male walked up to me, it was apparent he was intoxicated,” wrote Officer Jackson in a probable cause affidavit. “He could not walk in a straight line and his balance was poor. When he got close, I could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath as he spoke. He also slurred and dragged out his words as he spoke.”

Officer Jackson said Engel was extremely talkative and told him he had several warrants out for his arrest but he asked the officer to not arrest him. Engel allegedly admitted he was drunk, saying he was “pretty toasty.”

A records check revealed Engel had an active warrant issued out of Illinois and another one issued out of Louisiana. Authorities in Illinois said they would extradite.

Engel was taken into custody and transported to the Greene County Jail where he was booked in at 11:36 p.m. on a charge of public intoxication, a Class B misdemeanor, and on the warrant from Crawford County, Illinois.
