On Monday morning, GCSD says several people have received scam calls from a man who says he is a deputy. The man is telling people they have a warrant out for their arrest and they need to turn themselves in. Or, he tells them they need to go to the sheriff’s department to give a DNA sample. These are scam calls.
The Greene County Sheriff’s Department does not call anyone to inform them they are wanted on a warrant.
The telephone number that shows up on Caller ID has been 812-227-5245, but GCSD says these calls could come from different numbers as well. They say these scammers use multiple numbers and they are not able to be traced.
If you receive any calls of this nature and you feel uncomfortable about it, you may verify by calling the Greene County Sheriff’s Department at 812-384-4411 and choose Option 1 for dispatch.
