The job requirements include: A high school diploma or a GED or ability to be certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, obtaining a passing score in a firearms course, the ability to respond to various circumstances, ability to physically perform essential duties such as pursuing subjects in a vehicle at high speed, running, climbing stairs, forcing entry, scaling walls and jumping fences, the ability to deal swiftly, rationally and decisively with potentially violent individuals in precarious situations, ability to effectively listen and communicate with the public and other officials and be sensitive to ethics, gender and cultural diversities and disabilities.

In addition, this job may require a deputy to be able to adapt to changing weather conditions and environments, irregular or extended hours and be able to respond to emergencies from an off-duty status when needed.

“We always accept applications,” said Hasler.

Greene County Auditor Matt Baker provided more information about the position of deputy.

“The 2020 annual salary for a Sheriff’s Department Merit Deputy is $44,802,” said Baker. “Greene County provides health insurance, of which the employee pays part of the premium. The county also pays part of a retirement type of program with the employee also contributing.”

Baker said electives include dental, vision and life insurance as well as various other general kinds of insurance.
