Statement from the Chief of Police regarding Dec. 28 severe weather incident
/On December 28, 2025, at approx. 7:30 PM, a severe weather incident occurred across much of the area. As a result of that storm, Linton Police Department and Linton Fire Department were dispatched to an upstairs apartment of a building on S. Main St. where a family of five was reported to be trapped in an apartment with a collapsed roof. Linton PD and FD personnel responded and almost immediately rescued four of the five family members, including three young children. The fifth person was trapped beneath the debris of the collapse, which had to be removed piece by piece. After removal of that debris, the fifth subject was rescued from the collapse as well. All five were transported to Greene County General Hospital for treatment.
The storm appears to have caused significant damage to at least 7 downtown buildings, and multiple residences throughout our community. It also caused damage to our utility infrastructure, including the electrical grid. Several families were displaced from their homes due to the storm damage.
As soon as calls regarding the incident came in, the Linton Police and Fire Department received assistance from every police, fire, EMS, and emergency management organizations within what seems to be 30 miles.
Every agency that responded to assist us played a vital role in managing this emergency. I would like to thank them all for their assistance, but I know if I try to name them all, I will miss some. But on behalf of our community, I wish to thank them all. Today, they all helped save lives. Tomorrow (Monday, Dec. 29), Linton PD, Linton FD and the Emergency Management Agency will begin the process of assessing the damage and moving forward.
