Joyce L. Strait
/Joyce L. Strait, age 98, of Newburgh, formerly of her beloved hometown of Worthington, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday morning, March 9, 2026, at St. Vincent Hospital in Evansville. Born on April 27, 1927, in Worthington to Waitis L. Rogers, Sr. and Edith (Ball) Rogers, Joyce lived a long, full life rooted in family, faith, and quiet strength.
A proud graduate of Worthington-Jefferson High School, Joyce learned early the value of hard work. During World War II, while still a young woman, she joined the workforce at NSWC Crane, helping build bombs to support the war effort, making 69 cents an hour. She was a true "Rosie the Riveter". Her dedication continued throughout a long career with the Federal Government, where she became a trusted, compassionate helper to many fellow retirees and widows navigating their federal benefits.
Joyce called Worthington home for nine decades. Only when she turned 90 did she move to Newburgh to live with her daughter, Diana - an adjustment made easier by the love and laughter they shared daily. She quickly became a familiar face around town, especially at the Donut Bank Bakery, where her mornings often began with a cup of coffee and a doughnut. Joyce had a soft spot for a good purse, a fresh hairstyle, and a dinner out shared with family or friends.
She was a longtime member of Worthington Christian Church and proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her faith, kindness, and independence were a testament to a life well lived and a heart well loved.
Joyce is survived by her two daughters, Linda (Mike) Piper and Diana McShanog; nine grandchildren, David (Priscilla) Piper, Amanda Piper, Mindy Piper (Jeff Mosier), Jon (Raquel) Pickard, Lori Bruce, Danielle (Andy) Wichern, Debbi Barker, James (Cathy) McShanog, and Kim (John) Bennett; along with great-grandchildren Noah, Emma, Henry, Moses, Stella, Abigail (Dalton), Felicity, Kassidy, Brilynn, Ellasynn, Kenski, Reef, Luciana, Drew, Paige, Austin, Nick, Stephen, Kiersten, Ashley, Tyler, Ryan, Jesse and Amber; great-great grandchildren, Aydreyn, Kaden, Rifton, Kylenn, MacKayla, MaKenzie, Jayden, Patrick, Anna, Allison, Kylie, Kelsey, and Preston. Each of them carries forward a piece of her love and spirit. She is also survived by a niece, Nancy (Dan) Weaver, nephew, John (Vicky) Rogers, and cousins, Rickie Ann (John) Pickard, Rich (Kim) Rogers, and Becky (Merl) Strosnider.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Russell L. Strait, whom she lovingly remembered after his passing in 1990; her brother, Waitis Rogers, Jr.; and her son-in-law, James Henry McShanog.
Joyce's family and friends will forever remember her gentle unwavering loyalty, and the grace with which she navigated nearly a century of life's joys and challenges. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Cheryl Davis for always making Joyce feel very special and beautifully styled. Cheryl was not only Mammaw's favorite hairdresser, but also a dear friend who showed her love and devotion for many years.
A funeral service to celebrate Joyce's life will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Worthington, of Walton Funeral Service, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, March 14, 2026, with Mark Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Worthington Cemetery.
