Marie Medlock
/Marie Medlock (96) passed away peacefully on March 2, 2026, at Autumn Trace in Linton, IN, with family by her side. She was born on December 11, 1929, in Jordan Village, IN, one of 7 children of Merle and Mary Alice (Newport) Kay.
She grew up in Freedom and Worthington, IN, graduating as valedictorian from Worthington High School. After graduation she attended nursing school in Illinois before marrying Pete Sarris, whom she met while working as a waitress at the Marathon restaurant in Worthington while she was in high school. They settled in Linton and raised three sons, Steve, Jon and Tony. Twin sons, Kent and Paul, born prematurely, passed away shortly after birth, a profound loss that stayed with Marie and likely contributed to her great love for children, especially babies. She found immense joy in her grandchildren, Angela, Bryon, Kyle and TJ, and great-grandchildren Danielle, Morgan, Peyton and Marley.
Apart from being a mother, Marie helped at Pete’s restaurant, The Linton Candy Kitchen, and was an accomplished seamstress, sewing clothes for herself and others, adding special touches to patterns so that the clothes fit perfectly with the wearer’s size, shape and style preferences. She knitted and crocheted as well. She made numerous stuffed animals and baby blankets. She taught bible stories to children while she was active in her church. When Pete passed away unexpectedly in 1971, Marie went to work as a medical assistant at Keller Aluminum. In 1976 Marie married Irving Medlock and resettled in Beech Grove, IN, where she worked for many years in the nursing administration office at Community Hospital. Upon retirement, Marie and Irv returned to Linton, spending winters in Florida. In the late 1980s they moved full-time to Bradenton, FL. Marie loved to walk along Coquina Beach or to sit in her Florida room overlooking the lake, reading or enjoying a glass of wine while watching the sunset.
Retirement provided Marie with the opportunity for travel. She and Irv started with a European river cruise. This was followed by many wonderful trips with Irv, her siblings and their spouses. During cruises to Alaska, Hawaii, Atlantic Canada, and the Caribbean, travels through Italy and several major European cities, and throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, Marie and her siblings enjoyed not just each other’s company, but friendly competitions of her favorite card game, Big Horse (Marie and Pete had been avid euchre players for many years previously). One of Marie’s favorite trips was an extended cruise from Indonesia all around Australia.
When Irv passed away in early 2023, Marie returned to Linton, living with her son Jon and his wife Phyllis, before transitioning to Autumn Trace.
Marie is survived by her brother, Jack Kay of Carmel Valley, CA, son Steve Sarris and his wife Amy of Indianapolis, son Jon Sarris and his wife Phyllis of Linton, IN, son Tony Sarris and his husband Michael of Asheville, NC, as well as stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
