Suspected student runaway situation ends in an arrest
/After a 15-year-old female student left school and got into a vehicle with an 18-year-old man, they left school property. They were located, she was found safe, and he was arrested.
Jared Ross Shipley, 18, of Bloomington, was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper Richard Klun on Thursday, January 30.
Trooper Klun was working as a school resource officer at Eastern-Greene Schools when he responded to the high school about a female student, a possible runaway, who had left the school grounds without permission in the company of an adult man, Jared Shipley.
When Trooper Klun checked the school’s surveillance video, it showed a vehicle matching the description of Shipley’s vehicle arrive on the school grounds at 12:07 p.m. and at 12:24 p.m., the female student left the school and got into the vehicle. Her absence was reported to a school administrator at 12:30 p.m.
When the school principal contacted the student’s mother, she said if someone had picked her daughter up, it had to be Shipley. The mother contacted the daughter then told the administrator that Shipley was going to bring her daughter back to the school.
By that time, dispatch had already issued an attempt to locate Shipley and Trooper Caleb Garvin located Shipley and the student before they arrived back at the school.
When Trooper Klun talked to Shipley, Shipley allegedly said he knew the student was 15 years old and they had known each other for about a year, that he was aware she was enrolled in school, and aware he did not have permission to leave with her. He allegedly said he understood the consequences.
Shipley was transported to the Greene County Jail where he was booked in around 3 p.m. His bond was set at $1,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted $100 and was released the same day.
The preliminary charge against Shipley is contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class A misdemeanor. He has retained a defense attorney, Sam Shapiro of Bloomington, to represent him.
