One man was critically injured after being shot early Wednesday in Linton and a suspect has been arrested on a preliminary charge of attempted murder.
The victim is Todd W. Bennett, Jr., also known as Toddy Bennett, 24, of Linton.
Jared Turner
The suspect is Jared T. Turner, 24, of Linton.
The incident has been under investigation since early this morning by detectives and officers from the Linton Police Department assisted by personnel from the Indiana State Police and the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
Linton Police Chief Troy Jerrell said the suspect and other witnesses were brought into the police department where they’ve been interviewed by detectives from both LPD and GCSD.
“I would like to commend all the officers and departments on the diligent work they have done in regards to this investigation,” said Jerrell.
By mid-afternoon, Jared Turner had been arrested by LPD Det. Paul Clark and was on his way to the Greene County Jail.
Jerrell said dispatch at the Linton Police Department first received a call at 5:20 a.m. reporting that a male subject had been shot in the area on A Street SW in Linton.
Greene County Rescue/Greene County Ambulance Service responded to the scene and the victim was transported to Greene County General Hospital. Bennett was then transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis.
As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jerrell said Bennett was alive and undergoing treatment but his condition was serious. When the LPD released a statement around 3:45 p.m., Jerrell said Bennett was in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical care.
Turner was identified as the suspect early on and detained. After evidence and information was gathered from the scene and from the numerous interviews, he was placed under arrest.
Turner is being held on preliminary charges of attempted murder, a Level 1 felony, and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 2 felony.
Jerrell said the investigation is ongoing and further charges are possible as the investigation unfolds and more facts are gathered.
Once the findings of the investigation reach the Greene County Prosecutor, who makes the charging decisions, the exact charges could change and additional charges may be added.
Editor’s Notes: According to information included in requests for a couple of search warrants issued within the past few weeks, Turner may be a suspect in another unrelated criminal incident.
Bennett was arrested back in 2014 following a tragic crash on State Road 54 between Linton and Switz City that killed one man and injured two others. He was found guilty in 2015 of operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing a death and operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious bodily injury, was sentenced, served his time in Indiana DOC and was released last year.
