During a traffic stop in Linton Monday night, a Jasonville man told an officer he had not been drinking, but when an officer searched the vehicle, he reported finding methamphetamine.
Jerry Lee Raines
Jerry Lee Raines, 66, Jasonville, was arrested by Officer John Agan of the Linton Police Department on Monday night, October 12.
Around 4:45 p.m. Monday, Officer Agan stopped a tan Saturn Relay van after he saw the van traveling near the intersection of 9th Street NE and E Street NE in Linton because he suspected the owner of the van was driving with a suspended license. He said the back glass on the van was dark and dirty and he was unable to see the driver.
After the van was stopped, the driver was identified as Jerry Raines. The owner of the van was one of two passengers. There was an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage, most all of it consumed, on the center console but Raines said it belonged to one of the passengers and that he had not consumed any alcohol.
Raines consented to a search of the vehicle and Officer Agan reported officers found several items including a glasses case with a clear plastic zip bag containing a white crystal substance that field-tested positive as methamphetamine. They also found a smoking device with a white crystal substance as well as a cigarette paper rolled with a plant material that field-tested positive as marijuana.
Raines allegedly admitted he had purchased and smoked the methamphetamine in Terre Haute, using the pipe that was seized.
Raines was arrested and booked into the Greene County Jail at 8:07 p.m. Monday. He was being held without bond pending court appearance – no date set yet.
When he appears in Greene Superior Court for his initial hearing, he’ll be formally charged with:
Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,
Possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor, and
Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
