Delmar Charles Hasler, age 96, of Linton, passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, September 10, 2022, at Garden Villa in Bloomington, following a short stay. He was born in Linton on January 30, 1926, the son of Eli Rex and Ruby Pearl (Wright) Hasler.

Delmar grew up in Fairplay Township in Greene County, and was a 1944 graduate of Switz City High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp during his senior year on January 26, 1944. He served with the 99th Bomb Squadrons 9th Bomb Group during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the service at Camp Atterbury with the rank of Corporal on April 22, 1946.

Delmar and June lived in Worthington a short time and moved to Indianapolis where he attended the Indiana College of Mortuary Science on the GI Bill. Following his graduation in 1948, they moved to Linton and he began his career as a funeral director/embalmer for Welch & Cornett Funeral Home and Ambulance Service. Delmar worked for Welch & Cornett and was a stockholder in the company from 1955 until 1965, when he and his business partner, Marvin Taylor, purchased the business in full. They operated the business together until Taylor’s retirement in 1976 when Delmar became president and sole owner. His son Rodney joined the firm at that time and they operated the business’ together in Linton and Worthington for many years until his semi-retirement in 1988. Rodney served as president and Delmar remained part of the business until their long time employees purchased in 2004. Delmar remained helping throughout the rest of his life, and would be a the friendly face at the door. He had great pride in that he held his funeral director license for 74 years, the longest and oldest in the state of Indiana. One of his greatest joys in life was serving others during his many years at the funeral home.

Delmar served two terms as Greene County Coroner, in which he had more votes during the election than any other elected official. He served on the Greene County General Hospital Board of Trustees for 26 years, serving as president during a portion of that time. He served on numerous boards during his life, including Peoples Trust Bank and Glenburn Home. On August 2, 2015, he received a Sagamore of the Wabash from Governor Mike Pence. He was inducted in the Freedom Festival Hall of Fame on July 4, 2017, and attended the Honor Flight for World War II veterans September 2017.

He enjoyed working in the yard, playing cards with friends, collecting antiques, spending time in Florida fishing during the winters, IU sports, watching ballgames, and was an avid antique car collector, always having special memories of courting his wife June in a 1936 Ford.

He was a member of Saron United Church of Christ in Linton. He was a life-member of the American Legion Post #22, VFW Post #7118, and the B.P.O. Elks #866, and received his 50 year pin and life-membership from F. & A.M. Masonic Lodge #560, all of Linton.
