A Switz City  woman was arrested for theft after she allegedly tried to walk out of a Linton store without paying for several items including some underwear, some pet treats and a few other pet items.

Sherri Lyn Scruggs

Sherri Lyn Scruggs, 53, Switz City, was arrested by Officer Wayman JR Blazier of the Linton Police Department on Saturday, January 8.

Around 6 p.m. that Saturday, Officer Blazier responded to the Walmart store in Linton where the store’s asset protection team had stopped Scruggs in the vestibule as she was leaving the store with items she had not paid for.

One of the asset protection associates told Officer Blazier they had witnessed Scruggs putting items she did not scan in a bag with items that had been scanned. He said she also had concealed items on her person that included some dog treats in her sweatshirt pocket.

When Officer Blazier made his way to the office where Scruggs was waiting, she allegedly told him she didn’t know why she took the items because she had money to pay for them.

Photos were taken of all the items Scruggs allegedly took, including both men’s and women’s underwear, Delysym cough medicine, pet shampoo, bird accessories and more pet treats. The total value of the items was $66.06.

Officer Blazier reported her criminal record includes a prior conviction for theft in 1999 in Trousdale, Tenn.

Scruggs was arrested and booked into the Greene County Jail at 6:57 p.m. with bond set at $1,500 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $150 and was released the next day.

Her initial hearing was set for January 20 but she requested a continuance and the court approved, resetting the hearing for February 17.

Scruggs is facing a charge of theft, a Class A misdemeanor.
