A woman who took a new-to-her car out for a drive was stopped for speeding on I-69, then arrested when a trooper figured out she has never had a license to drive.

Jana Danielle Comer, 42, of Indianapolis, was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper John Yung last Saturday morning, May 23.

A little before 10 a.m., Trooper Yung was on duty sitting in a crossover on I-69 southwest of the 88-mile marker near where the right lane of the southbound side was closed off with barrels. There were flashing signs indicating the area was a work zone with speed to be reduced to 55 mph.

Then he saw Comer, driving a blue 2007 Kia Rondo passenger car, southbound and traveling fast in the left lane. Trooper Yung reported he clocked her vehicle going 91 miles per hour.

A traffic stop was initiated and Comer stopped on an off ramp. She said she had just purchased the car and was out for a drive. She produced a bill of sale for the vehicle but she did not have a driver’s license and the trooper determined she had never had a license. She also has previous convictions for driving without a license and is considered a habitual traffic violator.

Comer was taken into custody and booked into the Greene County Jail at 10:53 a.m. Her bond was set at $11,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $1,100, was released the next day and given a date and time to be in court.

She is facing preliminary charges of:

• Operating a motor vehicle after forfeiture of license for life, a Level 5 felony,

• Reckless driving at unreasonable speed that endangers safety, a Class C misdemeanor, and

• Knowingly or intentionally operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a license, a Class C misdemeanor.

Her initial hearing is scheduled for early Thursday, June 4.
