Driver arrested for OVWI after hitting three barrels on I-69
/A pick-up truck driver was arrested and is facing felony OVWI charges after a trooper saw him disregard a traffic light then hit three traffic barrels on I-69 last Friday afternoon.
John Chittick Calhoun, 73, of the Porter Ridge area of rural Spencer, was arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper John Yung last Friday afternoon, May 22.
Trooper Yung was on duty on I-69 at 12:24 p.m. last Friday when he and another trooper saw Calhoun driving a white 1988 Ford F-150 southbound on I-69.
Trooper Yung reported Calhoun disregarded a traffic signal then hit three traffic barrels while southbound. A traffic stop was initiated.
Calhoun allegedly needed help walking and standing, was unsteady, showed signs of driving while intoxicated and there were alcoholic beverage containers in view in the vehicle.
Field sobriety tests were not given due to physical limitations.
Trooper Yung, a certified chemical test operator, administered a chemical test at the Greene County Sheriff’s Department around 1:21 p.m. and reported Calhoun had an alcohol concentration of .181. The legal limit is .08.
Trooper Yung said Calhoun has a previous conviction for operating a vehicle while intoxicated in Owen County in 2018.
Calhoun was booked into the Greene County Jail at 2:25 p.m. with bond set at $8,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed.
Calhoun is facing preliminary charges of:
Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor,
Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person with a prior conviction within seven years, a Level 6 felony,
Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor,
Operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction within seven years, a Level 6 felony,
Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more, a Class A misdemeanor, and
Operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more with a prior conviction, a Level 6 felony.
He is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing early in the morning, Wednesday, May 27.
