Lieutenant Paul Bucher, Commander of the Bloomington District, welcomes the two new troopers to serve Monroe, Morgan, Brown, Greene, Owen and Lawrence Counties.
ISP Probationary Trooper Samuel Wagner
Assigned to Greene County
Samuel Wagneris from Pierceton, Indiana (near Fort Wayne) and a 2003 homeschool graduate. Wagner earned his B.A. in Criminal Justice from Indiana University at Bloomington. Probationary Trooper Wagner also currently serves in the Army National Guard (Infantry and Artillery Forward Observer). Probationary Trooper Wagner and his wife have two children and reside in rural Lawrence County. Wagner’s grandfather was a 30-year patrolman in St. Paul, Minn. Probationary Trooper Wagner will primarily patrol Greene County.

Assigned to Lawrence County
Chance Humphreyis a native of Springville, Indiana and a 2002 graduate of Bedford North Lawrence High School. Humphrey spent three years furthering his education at the University of Indianapolis and Ivy Tech. Probationary Trooper Humphrey and his wife Becky have two children and reside in rural Lawrence County. Probationary Trooper Humphrey will primarily patrol Lawrence County.
78th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy
Both troopers are from a class of 54 recruits who just graduated from the 78th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy on Thursday, December 13, 2018.
During the 22-week training period, the recruits received over 600 hours of classroom instruction as well as nearly 400 hours of hands-on practical and scenario-based training exercises. Some subject areas of training included criminal and traffic law, crash investigations, emergency vehicle operations, defensive tactics, firearms, and a host of other subjects related to modern policing.
These troopers will now be assigned to train with veteran troopers for the next 13 weeks before receiving their own patrol cars for solo patrol.

Jennifer Ann Crites, age 47, of Worthington, entered eternal life on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital in Evansville, leaving behind a legacy of love, kindness, and generosity. She was born in Bedford on March 18, 1978, the daughter of Robert Paul and Elizabeth Ann (Porter) White.
Micki Elaine Church, 84, of Linton, Indiana, went to Heaven with loved ones by her side, on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Autumn Trace Assisted Living in Linton. She was born on February 9, 1941 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Max Earl and Cordy ‘Berti’ (Lashbrook) Hopkins. Micki married the love of her life, Jerry D. Church on October 11, 1959.
Justin David Sprang, age 20, of Linton, passed away due to an accident, at 8:45 PM on Saturday, February 22, 2025. Justin was born, along with his twin brother Jared, on December 21, 2004, the son of David Michael and Shelley Ann (Fisher) Sprang.
Joshua David Newton, age 39, of Petersburg, formerly of Linton, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025. He was born in Linton on March 27, 1985, the son of James E. and Tamberly L. (Poe) Newton.
Larry D. Beverstock, 84, of Cloverdale, Indiana, passed away, on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at his home with loved ones by his side. He was born on September 25, 1940 in Kansas City, Missouri to Bard Bertram Beverstock and Iris (Robison) Beverstock Love. Larry married his loving wife, Sandy S. (Bloom) Beverstock on March 9, 1995.
