Linton man arrested on felony sexual battery charge

A Linton man is behind bars on a felony sexual battery charge after allegedly inappropriately touching a woman in February.

Joshua Garrett Adams, 35, is facing a Level 6 felony charge of sexual battery. A warrant for his arrest was issued March 19, and he was taken into custody March 20.

According to a probable cause affidavit written by Greene County Sheriff’s Department Det. Sgt. Shawn Cullison, he was dispatched to Greene County General Hospital on Feb. 27 to speak with a woman who reported that Adams put his hands down her pants without her consent. The woman, referred to in the affidavit as Victim 1, said the incident occurred on either Feb. 18 or Feb. 19.

Victim 1 told officers that Adams came to her home to pick up her cousin and drop him off at work between 6 and 7 a.m. She alleged that after dropping her cousin off, Adams returned to her house around 9 or 9:30 a.m. without her knowledge. She said he got into bed with her, and she felt movement in her hands. She told police she jolted awake and saw Adams pull his arm away, pretending to be asleep. She then told him to leave and not return.

During a follow-up interview on March 4, the woman said she had since spoken to Adams about the incident. According to the affidavit, she said Adams told her he had smoked marijuana and eaten gummies and didn’t remember what happened.

The woman also told officers her fiancé quit his job so he could stay home with her more often following the incident, according to the affidavit.

A babysitter, identified as Witness 1 in the affidavit, was at the house at the time of the alleged incident. She told police she entered the house as usual, gathered cleaning supplies from the kitchen, and cleaned the bathroom. After finishing, she said she saw Victim 1 sitting up in bed and alleged that she saw Adams’s hand moving under the blanket. She said she heard the woman tell him to get out of the house.

Another person, referred to as Witness 2, was reportedly asleep on the bedroom floor when the incident occurred. He told police he awoke and saw movement in Victim 1’s pants, according to the affidavit.

On March 13, Cullison interviewed Adams at the Linton Police Department. According to the affidavit, Adams claimed the woman was making the allegations because he would not comply with her demands—such as driving others around without compensation, ensuring her cousin got to work, and helping children get to school. When asked where the woman was during those times, Adams said she was either sleeping or working.

Adams was booked into the Greene County Jail on March 20. His bond was set at $4,000 surety with 10% cash allowed. He was released after posting $400.

Adams pled guilty to a Level 4 felony charge of sexual misconduct with a minor charge in March 2017.
