Virginia Rose Cliff

Virginia Rose Cliff, 90, of Springville, passed away peacefully at home in the early hours of Saturday, August 15, 2026, surrounded by the family she loved so deeply.  Born June 27, 1936, in Terre Haute, Virginia was the daughter of William "Bill" R. Thomas and Esther (Sparks) Johnson. She graduated from Chauncy Rose High School in Terre Haute.

While working at a Terre Haute hat store - a chance meeting with local bus driver Bernard C. Cliff changed the course of her life. The two married on July 20, 1960, and built a home, a family, and a lifetime of memories together while raising seven children.

Virginia was never one to sit still. She gave her time to her community as a volunteer of the Center Township Volunteer Fire Department and as a Cub Scout leader. She was also a member of the National Rifle Association. Her hands were often busy crocheting or knitting something made with love, and her kitchen was a place where good food, laughter, and family naturally gathered.

She had a lifelong love of the outdoors and was happiest when hunting, fishing, or camping with those she loved. Her adventurous spirit never faded: at 89 years old, Virginia was still camping over Memorial Day weekend. More than any hobby or accomplishment, however, her family was her pride and joy. Her greatest legacy is the generations of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who knew her love, strength, determination, and unmistakable spirit.

Virginia is survived by her children, Thomas (Debbie) Mulvihill, Joyce (Dave, Sr.) Setters, William (Clavel) Mulvihill, Selena (John) Thompson, Timothy (Becky) Cliff, and Tony (Gayla Armstrong) Cliff; granddaughter Tanya (Kelly) Abram, whom Virginia raised; 29 additional grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; 56 great-great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law Robin Cliff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Bernard; her son, Bernie Cliff, Jr.; her stillborn son, George Edward Cliff; and her infant great-grandson, Hayden Setters.

Virginia will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother, a capable and independent woman, an outdoorswoman, a wonderful cook, and the heart of a large family. Her love and influence will continue to live on in every generation she leaves behind.

Funeral service will be held at Welch & Cornett Funeral Home in Linton, of Walton Funeral Service, at 1:00 PM on Friday, August 21, 2026, with Pastor Tim Sumpter officiating. Burial will follow at Flynn Cemetery, near her home in Springville.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home of Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, and Friday from 11:00 AM until the time of service.
