Bloomfield driver charged with leaving the scene
/A Bloomfield man, who waited a day to report he’d run off the road and hit a neighbor’s house, is being charged with leaving the scene.
Matthew May, 49, Bloomfield, is facing a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of an accident, a Class B misdemeanor.
May was the driver of a gray 2009 Toyota that ran off the road, hit a house, ran over landscaping and hit a clothesline.
According to Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Jordan Allor, the accident occurred on Sunday, June 21, but May did not report it until the next day, Monday, June 22, when he called the sheriff’s department and said he drove his vehicle into a neighbor’s yard and it was stuck.
Deputy Allor was dispatched to the scene on East Main Street in Bloomfield where he found the vehicle and saw black marks on the house where it had been hit. He also found debris in the yard where the vehicle had run over landscaping and then hit a clothesline.
Deputy Allor located May who said he didn’t know how he ended up in the yard, but he’d taken Librium, which is a Schedule IV controlled substance. Deputy Allor noted that during the interview, May showed signs of impairment and was drinking vodka from a half-gallon container.
May said he was on his way home, coming from the CVS Pharmacy in Bloomfield where he had his prescription filled. He said he knew he was not supposed to drive after taking the medication, but he only drove from CVS to his home.
Deputy Allor then learned the prescription was filled the day before and that’s when the accident happened. When he asked May if he did not call in the accident on the day it occurred because he was intoxicated, May allegedly said yes.
May will be receiving a summons to appear in Greene Superior Court on September 3 for an initial hearing.
