Melvin Lee Bruner
/Melvin Lee Bruner, 70, of Bloomfield, finished his journey in this life at 9:40 PM on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Redcrest IU Hospice House in Bloomington, and was relocated to his home in Heaven with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born on September 18, 1955, in Rochester, Indiana, Melvin was the son of Robert and Mary (Carpenter) Bruner.
Melvin lived a life defined by hard work, curiosity, and connection. A 1973 graduate of L & M High School, he built a career that reflected both his versatility and strong work ethic. Over the years, he worked in mall remodeling, lumber sales, highway construction, and retail management at Goody's and Dollar General. In his later years, he found special joy in what he fondly called his "retirement job," driving for the Amish community - a role that allowed him to meet people, share stories, and stay connected to others.
Faith and community were central to Melvin's life. As a member of Faith Christian Church in Bloomfield, he found both purpose and fellowship. He had a deep passion for genealogy, always eager to uncover family stories and preserve connections across generations. He also enjoyed photography, traveling to new places, friendly games, collecting playing cards, and working with his hands through carpentry.
Above all, Melvin cherished his family. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 29 years, Rita G. (Bishop) Bruner; his children, Hilary Kanyi and Caleb Jerrells; and his grandchildren, Marissa Jerrells and Mandela Kanyi. He is also survived by his brothers, Robert "Bob" (Anita) Bruner, Gary (Brenda) Bruner, and Daniel (Rhonda) Bruner; a sister-in-law, Joleen Bruner; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Michael Bruner; his niece, Julie Racey; and his great-nephew, Jacob Racey.
A funeral service to celebrate Melvin's life will be held at Faith Christian Church in Bloomfield at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 2, 2026, with Richard Crabtree officiating. Visitation will take place at the church on Wednesday, July 1, from 4:00-7:00 PM, and again on Thursday from 10:00 AM until the time of service.
