Bernadene T. (Turpin) Kay
/Bernadene T. (Turpin) Kay, age 93, of Freedom, Indiana, passed away peacefully at her residence, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday, December 28, 2025. Born in Worthington, Indiana, on November 12, 1932, to Chester and Eva (Bowersock) Turpin, she built a life marked by quiet faith, hard work, and devoted service to others.
Bernadene grew up in Worthington and graduated from Worthington-Jefferson High School, beginning a lifelong connection to her community and its schools. She later married Floyd “Bus” Kay, and together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and steadfast support for their children and grandchildren.
For many years, Bernadene worked as a teacher’s aide with Spencer-Owen Community Schools, where she was known for her patience, kindness, and genuine care for students. Her commitment to community life extended beyond the classroom, as she faithfully volunteered her time at the Son Shine Shop, the Salvation Army, and the Red Cross.
Bernadene was a devoted member of the Jolly Homemakers Home Economics Club for 63 years, cherishing the fellowship and friendships it brought into her life. A member of Freedom United Methodist Church, she lived out her faith through service and hospitality, and she found simple joy in birdwatching and observing the beauty of God’s creation around her.
