Worthington Deputy Marshal Russell Walls appointed as interim town marshal
/Worthington Town Marshal Randy Raney has officially resigned from his post and the Worthington Town Council is accepting applications. Deputy Marshal Russell Walls has been appointed as interim town marshal.
Worthington Town Council President Tom Franklin confirmed that Marshal Raney submitted his resignation this week, effective this Friday night at midnight, November 16.
Marshal Raney was suspended with pay by Franklin approximately two weeks prior to the October meeting of the council. On October 8, the council first met during an executive session called prior to the regular meeting for the purpose of considering a personnel matter involving Raney. Then during the regular public monthly meeting, the Council confirmed and supported Franklin’s initial decision with a unanimous vote in favor of Raney’s suspension with pay.
The reason for Raney’s suspension is a personnel matter and is not a matter of public record.
Not long before Raney’s suspension, a newly-hired deputy marshal resigned leaving the WPD one officer short, then Raney was suspended leaving the WPD two officers short. Deputy Marshal Walls stepped up to handle the responsibilities, and he’s been assisted by personnel from the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
The Council is now accepting applications for the position of town marshal.
Franklin said he and Councilman Gerren Cullison have been tasked with screening applications to select applicants to be interviewed by the council. They hope to name the next town marshal before the end of the year.
Although there’s a position as deputy marshal open, Franklin said that slot would not be filled until after a town marshal is appointed so the new marshal can participate in the hiring process.
Applications and resumes should be submitted to the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office in the Worthington Municipal Building. For more information, contact the Clerk-Treasurer’s Office at 812-875-2641.
