A Linton man was sentenced to 180 days in the county jail on Wednesday.

During a hearing in Greene Superior Court, Kevin Lee Corns, now 33, changed his plea to guilty of a Level 6 felony count of theft.

Corns has been in the Greene County Jail since he was booked in early on Tuesday, April 24. His bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed, but he did not post bond. He was given credit for 44 days already served.

Corns was arrested by Linton Police Officer Jace Herndon who was dispatched to a location on Base Road late on Monday, April 23.

When Herndon and LPD Officer Orry Phipps arrived outside a residence, they were met by two women. One said they were there looking for her cell phone that had been stolen earlier in the evening.

The woman explained that Corns had stopped at her house looking for someone and he asked to use her cell phone while he was there. She agreed but after he left, she could not find her phone. Using an online app, she pinged her phone and determined it was at the location on Base Road. She and her friend then went to that location but also called police.

When Officer Herndon went to the door of the house, he saw Corns sitting on the edge of a bed inside the door. Corns was asked to step outside.

Herndon reported that Corns said he had been to the woman’s house and had used her phone, but he left and did not take the phone.

While officers were there, a resident of the house drove up and wanted to know what was going on. The officers explained the purpose of their visit. The resident then went into his house and searched for the phone, finding it stashed underneath the mattress of the bed where Corns was sitting when officers arrived.

Corns was taken into custody and according to Herndon, Corns has had multiple convictions for theft.
