Solsberry couple arrested on school attendance violation warrants
/A Solsberry couple was arrested May 6 on compulsory school attendance violation warrants after their child accumulated 10 unexcused absences this school year.
Lauren Ashley Mobley, 27, and James Todd Mobley, 41, were arrested by Eastern Greene School Corp. Police Officer Michael Coy.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the Mobleys were served criminal summonses on April 3 to appear in Greene Superior Court. When they failed to appear in court on May 5, warrants were issued for their arrests.
Coy had gone to the Mobley residence on Dec. 19, 2024, to deliver a letter notifying them that their child had reached nine unexcused absences for the school year. Neither parent was home at the time, so the letter was left with individuals at the residence.
When Coy reviewed attendance records on March 26, he discovered the Mobleys’ child had accumulated 10 unexcused absences.
Greene County Prosecutor Jarrod Holtsclaw said that in July 2024, the Indiana Legislature passed a series of new statutes and amended others aimed at reducing truancy. Schools are now required to report to the prosecutor’s office any student age 17 or younger who is considered a habitual truant.
Under Indiana law, a habitual truant is defined as a student with 10 unexcused absences in a school year. If a student reaches this threshold, the school’s attendance officer or school resource officer must prepare an affidavit against the student’s parent or guardian alleging the crime of failure to comply with compulsory school attendance law and submit it to the prosecutor for filing in court.
The Mobleys were transported to the Greene County Jail, where their bonds were set at $5,000 each, with 10% cash allowed. Both were released after posting $500.
