Sheriff urges residents to register storm shelters to aid first responders

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office is offering residents the opportunity to register storm shelters located at their homes, a step aimed at improving emergency response and protecting families in the aftermath of severe weather.

Sheriff George Dallaire announced the initiative following the May tornadoes that impacted multiple areas across Greene County. Many residents have expressed plans to add storm shelters as part of their rebuilding process or family safety preparations.

“This information could be very valuable in the event of major structural damage to their residence for all first responders. This would allow first responders to know in advance the location of their storm shelter in the event of an emergency,” Sheriff Dallaire said.

Registration information will be securely shared with the local fire departments who assist during severe weather events. Knowing storm shelter locations in advance can save precious time during search-and-rescue operations.

Residents can register their storm shelter by contacting John Sherer, 911 Coordinator, at 812-384-4411, where they will be asked a few brief questions.
