Rural Bloomfield man accused of battery and public nudity
/A rural Bloomfield man is facing criminal charges after deputies responded a couple of weeks ago to a report of a naked man standing in a county road throwing things at passing vehicles.
Cory J. Sims, 43, Bloomfield, is facing criminal charges following an incident that occurred on Monday afternoon, April 12.
Deputy Davis Aerne of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department, the investigating officer, said he responded to a location on East Carmichael Road in eastern Greene County as did Deputy Terry Wade, Det. David Elmore, and the Greene County Ambulance Service.
At 1:24 p.m. that day, a caller told GCSD dispatch that a naked man was standing in the middle of Carmichael Road throwing things at vehicles.
Deputy Wade got there first and when Deputy Aerne arrived, he saw Deputy Wade talking to the man who was in the middle of the road with a black trash can holding a large metal wire. There were two dogs nearby. The man was holding and shaking his genitals and appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. He was reported to have several lacerations from injuries to himself.
The man, later identified as Cory Sims, was reported to be agitated, aggressive toward the officers, and he was making numerous statements using profanity.
In a probable cause affidavit prepared by Deputy Aerne, he describes an intense situation with Sims asking the deputies to take their guns off, asking for a bullet, and asking them to shut a truck off. Deputy Aerne said there were several vehicles that were stopped in the roadway during this incident and at one point, Deputy Wade walked past Sims and asked the driver of a truck to turn his vehicle off in an attempt to gain the trust of Sims.
Finally, when Sims turned his back to Deputy Aerne and started to walk away, Deputy Aerne deployed his taser with one probe striking Sims in the lower back and one in a shoulder. Sims was then placed in hand restraints and ambulance personnel were summoned to remove probes and check on Sims.
The door of a nearby residence was open and when deputies checked, nobody was there but the residence was in disarray with household items thrown on the ground and broken.
Deputy Aerne rode with Sims in the ambulance on the way to IU Health Bloomington Hospital for medical evaluation. During the ride, Sims allegedly continued to be combative, kicking and fighting, and hitting the deputy several times with his legs.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Sims after charges were filed this week.
Sims will be facing charges of battery against a public safety official, a Level 6 felony, and public nudity, a Class B misdemeanor.
