Linton woman arrested on OWI charge after late-night traffic stop

A Linton woman was arrested late April 11 after police say she was driving while intoxicated.

According to a report from the Linton Police Department, Kimberly Cooksey, 55, faces a preliminary charge of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Officer Cade Herndon reported he observed a blue Mini Cooper traveling north on 8th Street NE around 11:28 p.m. without functioning taillights.

Police said the vehicle continued for several blocks after emergency lights were activated before eventually stopping at a residence on F Street NE, where the driver pulled into a garage.

The driver, identified as Cooksey, told the officer she did not see the police vehicle, according to the report.

While speaking with Cooksey, officers observed signs of impairment, including slurred speech, difficulty maintaining balance and the odor of alcohol. Police reported that money fell from her wallet, and she nearly fell while attempting to pick it up.

Cooksey told officers she had consumed alcohol earlier in the evening but said she had not had anything to drink for approximately 45 minutes.

Due to reported medical issues, including a prior knee surgery, standard field sobriety tests were limited. However, officers conducted a horizontal gaze nystagmus test, which indicated impairment, according to the report.

Cooksey agreed to a portable breath test, which showed a result of 0.14, police said.

She was transported to the Linton Police Department, where a certified breath test was attempted but resulted in an insufficient sample. Cooksey was then taken to Greene County General Hospital, where a blood sample was collected for further testing.

Cooksey was transported to the Greene County Jail without incident. Her bond was set at $4,000 surety with 10% cash allowed. She was released after posting $400.

She is scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing on April 30.
