Deceased candidate to remain on Greene County primary ballot

Following the death of a candidate for Greene County Council District 3, election officials have confirmed his name will remain on the ballot for the upcoming primary election.

Alan Dale Moody, 76, of Worthington, died Saturday, April 11. Moody was running in the Republican primary against incumbent Kelly Zimmerly.

According to Greene County Clerk Jamie Thompson, Moody’s name will remain on the ballot because ballots have already been printed and voting machines programmed.

Under Indiana law, if a candidate becomes a “former candidate” after ballots are printed, counties are not required to reprint ballots. Votes cast for that candidate will still be counted.

If Moody were to receive the most votes in the primary, a candidate vacancy would be declared. In that case, the county party chairman would appoint a replacement nominee for the general election. The replacement could be the opposing candidate or another individual selected by the party.

Indiana Code states that when a former candidate receives the highest number of votes in a primary election, the political party may fill the vacancy according to its internal procedures.
