Katherine Anne Shonk, 45, Linton, was arrested by Linton Police Chief Paul Clark last Thursday, May 28, after Chief Clark and LPD Deputy Chief Debbie McDonald responded to an incident in Linton.

Shonk appeared in Greene Circuit Court today, Wednesday, June 3, for an initial hearing on criminal charges filed after an investigation by Deputy Chief McDonald, the lead investigator.

Shonk has been charged with:

  • Domestic battery with bodily injury to a person under the age of 14, a Level 5 felony,

  • Two counts of battery against a public safety official, both as a Level 6 felony, and

  • Resisting law enforcement – knowingly or intentionally forcibly resisting, a Class A misdemeanor.

The officers were dispatched last Thursday afternoon to a residence on 7th Street NE for a physical domestic. When they arrived, Clark spoke to Shonk and McDonald spoke to a child who was very upset. McDonald reported Shonk was the child’s stepmother. The child’s mother and father were also present.

When the child’s mother was interviewed, she explained the child was at the residence to spend a week with the father and stepmother. On that Thursday, while the child’s father was at work, there was an incident between the child and the stepmother. The mother said her child called her and was crying hysterically asking the mother to come pick her up. The mother said she could hear Shonk in the background screaming at the child. She left work to pick the child up, and on the way, she called the police department.

Deputy Chief McDonald said when she talked to the child, the child said Shonk grabbed her neck and choked her. She said it hurt and she could not breathe. She said Shonk did it twice and was really mad at her, but she didn’t know why.

McDonald reported the child’s neck had bruising and redness consistent with being choked and had bruising to the upper chest area.

Chief Clark took Shonk into custody but when she was being placed into the patrol vehicle, Shonk was yelling and McDonald said she stepped around the vehicle in time to see Shonk kick Clark in the legs, grab in private areas, try to bite him and attempt to pull away.

McDonald tried to place ankle restraints on Shonk but said Shonk kicked her several times in the legs and abdomen. With restraints in place, when they tried to place Shonk in the vehicle, she allegedly tried to bite Clark’s face and tried to use her head to hit McDonald in the face.

Shonk was booked into the Greene County Jail at 4:25 p.m.

When she appeared before Judge Erik Allen earlier today, a public defender was appointed to represent her.

According to court records, her bond has been set at $19,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of this evening, Wednesday, June 3. Shonk had not yet posted bond.
