A 23-year-old Jasonville man was charged with dealing methamphetamine after he allegedly sold a quantity of meth for $500 in Linton.

Derek Burton, aka Derek Thomas Scott Burton, was booked into the Greene County Jail in the early morning hours on Wednesday, April 25, by a member of the Greene County Drug Task Force.

Burton is accused of making an agreement and arrangements to deliver methamphetamine to a location in Linton on Tuesday, April 24. Police say Burton then met with a buyer and the transaction took place in Linton in Burton’s vehicle. He allegedly delivered crystal-like methamphetamine in excess of five grams but less than ten grams to an individual who paid $500 cash in the exchange.

When Burton was taken into custody later in the night, police reported he was in possession of the $500 from the transaction, along with a .380 caliber handgun in his vehicle.

Burton was first held without bond pending a court appearance.

During his initial hearing in Greene Superior Court on Monday, April 30, Burton was charged with a Level 2 felony, dealing in methamphetamine in an amount between five and ten grams with an enhancing circumstance.

A public defender was appointed to represent Burton and the judge set his bond at $40,000 surety with ten percent allowed.

Burton has since bonded out of jail after posting $4,000 cash.

In jail records, Burton is listed with a home address in Jasonville, but in court records, he’s also listed with a home address in Vincennes, and there’s another felony case pending against Burton in Knox County.

In the Knox County case, which was filed in February of this year, Burton was charged with maintaining a common nuisance – controlled substances, a Level 6 felony, and unlawful possession or use of a legend drug, also a Level 6 felony.

In the Knox County case, a trial date has been set in June. In the Greene County case, a trial date has not been set.
