A new criminal case has been filed against Kevin Douglas Johnson, 47, Linton. A warrant for his arrest was issued earlier today, Wednesday, December 23, but he won’t be hard to find. Johnson is currently an inmate in the Greene County Jail and the warrant will be served to him by jail staff.

As a result of the incident that occurred inside the jail, Johnson is facing new preliminary charges of:

  • Battery with bodily injury to a public safety officer, a Level 5 felony,

  • Battery by bodily waste, where there was moderate bodily injury, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.

Detective David Elmore of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department has been investigating the incident that occurred on Thursday, December 10.

On that day, jail staff requested assistance from Det. Elmore, telling him that Jail Officer/Special Deputy Angel Chaparro was being attacked by Kevin Johnson.

Det. Elmore said when he got to the jail’s booking area, he saw Chief Deputy/Major George Dallaire, Jail Commander Kenneth Conolty, and Officer Chaparro all on the floor with Johnson. After Johnson was placed in his cell, Det. Elmore conducted interviews with all involved and viewed video from the surveillance system.

Officer Chaparro said when he was in video court with Johnson, Johnson got upset with Superior Judge Dena Martin and when he was escorting Johnson back from the video court room, Johnson was verbally upset. When they got to the door of Johnson’s cell and he started to uncuff Johnson, Johnson lunged at him, pushing him in an aggressive manner.

Officer Chaparro told Det. Elmore that he then grabbed Johnson and took him to the ground, with assistance from Commander Conolty. While they were on the ground, Johnson allegedly tried to bite Chaparro but Chaparro was able to move his hand out of the way. Johnson also allegedly tried to spit in Chaparro’s face. Det. Elmore observed what appeared to be spit on the front of Chaparro’s uniform. Chaparro reported he had pain in his right wrist and his lower back.

Commander Conolty said he was in the hallway when Johnson was being escorted back to his cell. He said he saw Officer Chaparro open the cell door then saw Johnson lunge at Chaparro and push him against the door. Conolty went hands-on with Chaparro to assist Johnson to the ground. Conolty said once on the ground, Johnson tried to kick him in the head. He also said he heard Johnson spit, cuss and call Chaparro a name. Conolty did not report any injuries.

Det. Elmore reviewed video from the jail’s surveillance cameras and reported the video showed the same details the officers described. The video showed Johnson continuing to fight until Maj. Dallaire and Det. Elmore arrived to assist with getting Johnson under control.
