Indianapolis man arrested following counterfeit investigation, pursuit

An Indianapolis man was arrested Tuesday afternoon following an investigation into counterfeit currency that led to a foot pursuit, vehicle chase and crash involving law enforcement in Greene County.

According to an affidavit filed by Bloomfield Town Marshal Kenneth Tharp, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:31 p.m. Feb. 3 to the Dollar General store in the South Plaza on U.S. 231 South after an employee reported a suspected counterfeit $100 bill used in an attempted gift card purchase.

The suspect was identified as Denzel D. Travis, 32, of Indianapolis. Store employees held the bill for further inspection, but Travis reportedly left the store before the purchase was completed.

When Tharp arrived at the store, an employee identified Travis as he exited the building. Tharp attempted to speak with Travis about the bill, but Travis denied having a $100 bill and began walking away. Tharp instructed him to stop, but Travis fled on foot through the snow-covered parking lot.

During the pursuit, Tharp deployed his Taser as Travis reached a black Mercedes-Benz with temporary Illinois registration. Travis allegedly put the vehicle in reverse and accelerated at an unsafe speed, nearly striking Tharp. The Taser discharged into the side of the vehicle as Travis continued fleeing.

Travis then drove erratically through the parking lot, endangering other motorists, before exiting onto U.S. 231 South. Tharp initiated a vehicle pursuit with emergency lights and sirens activated. Speeds reached just under 80 mph, according to the affidavit.

During the pursuit, Travis reportedly traveled into oncoming traffic and later swerved his vehicle toward an Indiana State Police patrol vehicle driven by Trooper Kent Winstead near the intersection of U.S. 231 and Interstate 69. Travis then entered the southbound I-69 ramp while traveling northbound into oncoming traffic.

The pursuit ended when Travis lost control and became disabled in the median due to snow-covered conditions. Tharp’s patrol vehicle struck the suspect’s vehicle during the attempt to stop it. Sgt. Ryan Miller and Trooper Winstead secured the scene.

Travis was transported to the Greene County Jail, where he was was held without bond. His vehicle was towed by Owensburg Auto.

Greene County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Harvey Holt later determined Travis had successfully used a counterfeit $100 bill bearing the same serial number at the Bloomfield CVS Pharmacy to purchase a gift card and a birthday card earlier that day. Both counterfeit bills were collected as evidence.

Travis has been charged with resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, two counts of counterfeiting, aggravated battery, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and theft. Court records also indicate Travis was previously charged with counterfeiting and theft in Fountain County in April 2023 and was later convicted of theft in January 2025.

Travis is scheduled to appear in Greene Circuit Court Feb. 5 for an initial hearing.
