Kevin Eugene Hatfield, 44, Oaktown, Ind., was booked into the Knox County Jail late Friday, June 11, on a preliminary charge of felony murder.

Knox County Sheriff Doug Vantlin reported that deputies were dispatched to a home on North Scott Road, Oaktown, around 7 p.m. Friday. Oaktown is located in Knox County along US 41, south of Carlisle, north of Vincennes.

When deputies arrived at the home, they found Jasmin Lee Hatfield, 46, deceased. Deputies reported Hatfield suffered severe body wounds and that she had died at some point earlier in the day.

Kevin Hatfield was not at home at the time when deputies discovered his wife’s body, but he quickly became a suspect.

About an hour after the discovery, Hatfield was pulled over in Sullivan County by an Indiana State Police trooper and Sullivan County Sheriff’s deputies. Hatfield was taken into custody and transported to the Knox County Sheriff’s Department.

Hatfield is former resident of Jasonville, a native who attended Shakamak schools.

Hatfield was recently arrested in Greene County in a case involving operating a vehicle while intoxicated. When Hatfield was stopped in Linton by Officer Bobby Pierce of the Linton Police Department in mid-March for driving left of center, he showed signs of impairment and a blood draw was taken at Greene County General Hospital – results pending. The officer believed he may have been under the influence of a controlled substance – specifically methamphetamine.

Hatfield was not arrested at the time of the incident but a criminal case was filed and he was summoned to appear in court. He was a no-show and a warrant was issued for his arrest. The warrant remained outstanding until he wound up in jail in Knox County then was transferred in to the Greene County Jail on Friday, June 4. Hatfield then posted bond and was released from the Greene County Jail with a new court date in Greene Superior Court of June 17.

As of mid-day Saturday, no additional information has been released regarding the murder.  The investigation is ongoing.
