When a Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy found a Bloomfield man asleep at the wheel of a running vehicle parked at a convenience store, he woke him up then gave the man a ride to jail.

Trevor Daniel Wikle, 21, was arrested in the early hours of Thursday, July 26.

Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Zachary Goad was at the Picnic Basket convenience store in Bloomfield around 12:18 a.m. when he saw a man, later identified as Wikle, asleep behind the wheel of a black 2008 Toyota Camry in the parking lot of the store. The car was still running.

An employee of the store told the deputy the man had been asleep for about 15 minutes. He said he thought the driver was texting until he realized he wasn’t holding a cell phone and was asleep with the vehicle running. He had decided to call the police but then Deputy Goad stopped at the store.

Goad reported he tried to wake Wikle, who had popcorn still in hand, by knocking on the window but Wikle did not respond. The car door was not locked, so Goad opened the door and was able to wake Wikle, who exhibited signs of alcohol intoxication.

Bloomfield Police Officer Jordan Allor then arrived to assist with standard field sobriety testing. Wikle allegedly failed some, passed some, but he tested over the legal limit on a portable breathalyzer.

Wikle was transported to the Greene County Sheriff’s Department then later submitted to a certified breath test at 1:27 a.m. Goad reported the result showed Wikle had a blood-alcohol concentration of .092.

Wikle’s bond was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. He posted bond, was released, given a court date then appeared for an initial hearing on Monday.

Wikle has been charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor, and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to at least .08 but less than .15, a Class C misdemeanor.
