Two arrested in Greene County meth trafficking investigation

A months-long Indiana State Police investigation into a suspected methamphetamine distribution operation in Greene County led to the arrest of two individuals Tuesday after officers recovered more than 300 grams of meth and a loaded handgun during a traffic stop.

Shelly May Green, 39, Terre Haute, and Fred Allen Thompson Jr., 52, Bloomfield, were arrested May 20 and booked into the Greene County Jail after detectives found multiple plastic bags containing crystal-like substances believed to be methamphetamine inside their vehicle. The arrests stem from an ongoing investigation into Thompson, who authorities suspect is distributing large quantities of meth in the region.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene Circuit Court by Indiana State Police Det. Douglas E. Francis, detectives initially began monitoring Thompson in April after arranging a controlled buy through a confidential informant. That transaction resulted in the purchase of approximately 3.75 ounces of methamphetamine using pre-recorded state police funds.

On May 20, investigators observed a Chevrolet Equinox believed to be connected to Thompson leaving his Bloomfield residence. Detectives followed the vehicle, which was seen performing counter-surveillance maneuvers as it traveled to Indianapolis, stopping briefly at a residence on Richland Street before heading south toward Bloomington.

The Equinox was stopped on Sylvania Road near State Road 45 for displaying a false and fictitious license plate. Troopers observed plastic bags containing what appeared to be methamphetamine in plain view on the floorboard. A K-9 officer also alerted to the presence of narcotics.

Green, who was driving, and Thompson, the passenger, were taken into custody. Officers located a loaded Ruger 9mm handgun in the glovebox and a magazine with live rounds in the center console.

Following her arrest, Green admitted she had additional drugs concealed in her clothing and removed several more bags from her pants. The substances field-tested positive for methamphetamine. In total, approximately 338 grams of meth were seized.

Both Green and Thompson denied knowledge of the drugs or firearm. Thompson later told detectives they had stopped at a Steak ‘n Shake in Bloomington after visiting Indianapolis, where he claimed they went to a Kroger and attempted to visit his daughter.

Green has multiple prior convictions related to drug offenses, including dealing methamphetamine. Thompson is a convicted felon with a record that includes an invasion of privacy conviction in 2017.

Green is facing a charge of Level 2 felony dealing in methamphetamine—10 grams or more. Thompson is facing two charges of dealing methamphetamine—more than 10 grams, a Level 2 Felony and unlawful carrying of a handgun with a prior conviction within the last 15 years, a Level 5 Felony.

Green and Thompson are scheduled to appear in Greene Circuit Court for initial hearings on May 27.
