Traffic stop leads to stolen vehicle and drug arrest
/A Hymera man arrested last Thursday night on a drug charge was allegedly driving a stolen vehicle. He’s in jail on a $39,000 cash-only bond. In an unrelated case, during an investigation into a shooting that occurred in Hymera a week earlier, a male witness said the man owned the trailer next door and had a surveillance system with a camera facing the scene.
Last Friday, Sullivan County Sheriff Clark Cottom released information about the arrest.
Around 11:09 p.m. last Thursday, August 6, Sullivan County Sheriff’s Deputy Justin Copeland was doing extra patrol in Hymera when he observed a black Jeep Cherokee with a license plate light out. Deputy Copeland conducted a traffic stop, and further discovered that the vehicle had a fictitious plate.
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the vehicle was stolen from Whitestown, Indiana.
As deputies inventoried the vehicle, they discovered a bag of methamphetamine underneath the driver’s seat in a hidden compartment.
The driver, Aaron Lee Hibbard, 34, of Hymera, was arrested and booked into the Sullivan County Jail where his bond was set at $39,000 cash only.
Deputy Copeland was assisted on the scene by SCSD Deputies Cole Boatright and Greg Kreilein.
A criminal case was filed against Hibbard in Sullivan Circuit Court last Friday. He is facing preliminary charges of:
Possession of methamphetamine in an amount between 10 and 28 grams, a Level 4 felony,
Driving while suspended – a knowing violation with a prior conviction within 10 years, a Class A misdemeanor, and
Dealing in methamphetamine in an amount of 10 or more grams, a Level 2 felony.
As of late Monday, Hibbard had not yet posted bond and remained in jail. He is scheduled to appear in court for an initial hearing next Tuesday, August 18.
In an unrelated case, Hibbard’s name appeared in a probable cause affidavit filed in the cast of Dustin Turley, a man accused of shooting Trenton Keller multiple times in an incident that occurred in Hymera on Friday, July 31. During an investigation, a male witness to the shooting allegedly told a detective that the neighboring trailer had a video surveillance system with a camera that faced the area of the shooting. He said the trailer belonged to Aaron Hibbard and that Hibbard was the brother of a female witness.
