Job Description: Ordinance Enforcement Officer, Ensuring Community Compliance and Safety
Position Overview: The Ordinance Enforcement Officer is responsible for enforcing municipal codes, ordinances, and regulations to maintain the health, safety, and quality of life within the community. This role involves conducting inspections, investigating complaints, issuing citations, and educating the public about local laws and standards.
Key Responsibilities:
• Patrol assigned areas to monitor compliance with city ordinances, codes, and regulations.
• Investigate complaints related to property maintenance, zoning, noise, signage, parking, and other violations.
• Conduct field inspections of residential, commercial, and public properties.
• Document findings, prepare detailed reports, and maintain accurate records of violations and enforcement actions.
• Issue warnings, notices, and citations for non-compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
• Educate property owners, businesses, and the general public about municipal codes and compliance requirements.
• Testify in court or at administrative hearings regarding enforcement actions, when necessary.
• Coordinate with other departments such as police, fire, and public works for collaborative enforcement efforts.
• Attend training sessions to stay current on local ordinances, enforcement procedures, and safety protocols.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's or bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field preferred.
• Prior experience in code enforcement, law enforcement, or a related area is highly desirable.
• Strong knowledge of municipal codes, ordinances, and enforcement procedures.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in confrontational or stressful situations.
• Proficient in using computers and mobile devices for recordkeeping and reporting.
• Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record.
• Clean criminal history
• No illegal drug use and ability to pass drug screens when asked to do so
Working Conditions:
• Work is performed both indoors in an office setting and outdoors in various weather conditions.
• May require walking, standing, and driving for extended periods.
• Occasional exposure to potentially hazardous conditions or confrontational situations.
