Swapping price tags didn’t pay off
/A Worthington woman accused of swapping price tags and failing to scan other items at a Linton store ended up with a felony charge.
Jessica Renea Miller, 39, Worthington, was arrested by Officer Wayman JR Blazier of the Linton Police Department on Saturday, March 5.
Officer Blazier, the lead investigator, responded, along with LPD Chief Paul Clark, to the Walmart store in Linton at 3:38 p.m. that Saturday after the store reported a woman, later identified as Miller, had been swapping price tags and not scanning all her items when she was checking out.
When they were on the way, they learned Miller had gotten into a vehicle and was leaving the parking lot. The store was able to provide a license plate on the vehicle and said she was heading towards Bloomfield.
Miller lived at a location on County Road 800 North. Deputy Harvey Holt was near that location and was able to locate Miller as she was pulling into her residence. The other officers then responded to the same location.
When Officer Blazer talked to Miller, she allegedly admitted switching the price tag on a seat cushion and that she knew it was illegal to do so. She denied that she did not scan all the items. Besides the seat cushion, she allegedly did not scan a blackberry bush.
As Miller was leaving the store, an employee tried to stop her over the items she took and she told them she was going to her vehicle and leaving. When Officer Blazier asked her why she did not stay at the store, she allegedly said she had her grandchild with her and did not want her to see what was happening.
Miller was taken into custody and transported to the Greene County Jail where she was booked in at 5:30 p.m. with bond set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She posted $400 and was released later the same day.
The total value of the items allegedly taken was $42.91.
Officer Blazier determined Miller had a prior conviction of theft in Greene County in 2017.
Miller has been charged with:
Theft – with a prior conviction for either burglary or theft, a Level 6 felony, and
Theft, a Class A misdemeanor.
