Sexually violent predator allegedly staying in Linton facing felony charge of failure to register

A Vincennes man considered a sexually violent predator was recently found to be staying in Linton, allegedly without notifying authorities as required by law. He’s been arrested and is facing felonies in both Greene and Knox counties.

Robert Christopher Alumbaugh, 31, Vincennes, was arrested by Greene County Sheriff’s Deputy Camron Frye and booked into the Greene County Jail around 6:30 p.m. last Thursday, March 28.

On that day, Deputy Frye was advised of a warrant for Alumbaugh’s arrest, issued out of Knox County for two counts of felony failure to register as a sex offender. Knox County advised Greene County Dispatch that Alumbaugh was an habitual failure to register and they asked he be arrested and also charged in Greene County if he had been staying here longer than 72 hours.

Dispatch had also received a call from the landlord of a residence at 568 G Street NW in Linton who was concerned that Alumbaugh was a sex offender and was staying at the residence.

When Deputy Frye went to the residence, along with Deputy Alan Jackson, to serve the Knox County warrant, Alumbaugh was there. When told about the warrant, Alumbaugh asked “What for?”

Deputy Frye reported that when Deputy Jackson talked to one of the residents, he learned Alumbaugh had been staying there approximately seven days. The resident said they brought Alumbaugh there for a few hours and it turned into days. They also said they didn’t know about the warrant or about the sexual offender’s registry but they did know Alumbaugh had served time in prison.

Alumbaugh was taken into custody and transported to jail.

Now in addition to the case in Knox County, a new criminal case has been filed against him in Greene County on a preliminary charge of one count of failure to register as a sex offender, a Level 6 felony.

Alumbaugh’s bond in the Greene County case was set at $4,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed but he was held without bond for Knox County.
