Petersburg man arrested after traffic stop leads to drug, OVI charges
/An Indiana State Police traffic stop on Interstate 69 earlier this year has resulted in multiple charges against a Petersburg man after lab results confirmed the presence of fentanyl in his blood.
Tyler James Chandler, 30, was arrested Sept. 17 and transported to the Greene County Jail where he was held without bond.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed Aug. 18 in Greene Superior Court, Senior Trooper Richard Klun observed a northbound pickup truck weaving across lane lines near the 97-mile marker on Feb. 9. Klun reported the truck repeatedly crossed the fog line and yellow traffic lines before finally pulling over near the 100.5-mile marker.
The driver, identified as Chandler, allegedly admitted to “playing on his phone” when stopped. Klun said he smelled burnt marijuana and noticed Chandler’s pupils were “pinpoint,” a sign of possible opioid use. A subsequent search of the truck revealed two small plastic bags containing a powdery residue suspected to be heroin or fentanyl.
Chandler agreed to field sobriety tests and a blood draw at Monroe Hospital. The Indiana Department of Toxicology later confirmed the sample contained fentanyl and its metabolite norfentanyl, according to a supplemental probable cause affidavit filed Aug. 18.
Chandler appeared in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing Sept. 23. During the hearing, a bond of $15,000 surety with 10% allowed was set.
He faces charges of possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 6 Felony; operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A Misdemeanor; operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance or its metabolite in blood, a Class C Misdemeanor; and operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C Misdemeanor.
