Man faces alcohol-related charges after nearly causing head-on collision
/A 42-year-old Bloomfield man is facing charges after allegedly driving intoxicated and nearly striking a sheriff's deputy head-on along State Road 54.
According to a probable cause affidavit filed July 15 in Greene County Superior Court, Roy Arthur was arrested the evening of July 10 after Deputy Brayden DeMier with the Greene County Sheriff’s Office spotted Arthur’s vehicle— a white 2005 Honda Accord—crossing the center line directly into his lane of travel near the 9600 block of State Road 54.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Arthur’s vehicle swerved back into the westbound lane, avoiding a collision. After confirming with dispatch that the vehicle matched a report of a reckless driver, DeMier conducted a traffic stop at a nearby gas station.
According to the report, Arthur exited the vehicle and approached a gas pump before being ordered to return to the driver’s seat. DeMier noted slurred speech, exaggerated gestures, and two open “Hard Mountain Dew” cans in the car's cup holders. Arthur allegedly admitted to drinking “two or three” Four Lokos prior to driving.
With assistance from officers from the Worthington Police Department, a series of standardized field sobriety tests were conducted. Arthur reportedly showed multiple signs of impairment. At one point, he stumbled near a gas pump and nearly fell into a trash can. Testing was stopped early out of safety concerns, the report stated.
Arthur also repeatedly asked for water and complained about pistachios being stuck in his throat. He later vomited near the gas pump and registered a 0.165 blood alcohol content on a portable breathalyzer—more than twice the legal limit.
He was transported to Greene County General Hospital for a blood draw. A sample was taken and submitted to the Indiana State Laboratory for further analysis.
Arthur faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated and operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person.
