Jasonville man arrested after failing sobriety tests

A Jasonville man was arrested in the early hours of May 18 on multiple charges of operating while intoxicated after police say he failed field sobriety tests and registered a blood alcohol concentration more than twice the legal limit.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Greene Superior Court, Linton Police Officer Jocelyn Astleford responded to assist Reserve Officer Kent Medlock during a traffic stop near State Road 54 and Allen’s Motel. Officer Medlock requested additional officers to help determine whether the driver, identified as Briar S. Caddell, 21, was under the influence of alcohol.

Astleford reported that she was unable to detect the odor of alcohol from the vehicle due to the strong smell of air fresheners. Officer Medlock questioned Caddell, who admitted he had consumed “a couple of beers” earlier in the evening after leaving The Vault on Main Street.

Caddell agreed to participate in standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed, according to the affidavit.

A preliminary breath test conducted by Officer Davis Aerne at the scene indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.179.

Caddell was transported to the Linton Police Department, where Astleford administered a second round of sobriety tests in a controlled environment. He again failed. A certified chemical breath test showed a BAC of 0.182, well above Indiana’s legal limit of 0.08.

During a vehicle inventory, officers located an empty Coors Light can and an empty Busch Light can in the driver’s-side door pocket, along with a Crown Royal Blackberry box on the passenger-side floorboard.

Caddell was booked into the Greene County Jail without incident. His bond was set at $4,000 surety with 10 percent cash allowed. He was released after posting $400.

He faces preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor; operating while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor; and operating with an alcohol concentration equivalent of 0.15 or more, a Class A misdemeanor.

Caddell is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court for an initial hearing on May 29.
