Indianapolis man arrested on alcohol and drug-related charges
/When officers responded to the report of a vehicle in a ditch on County Road 900 North, west of Fry Street in Jasonville on Sept. 17, they did not find the vehicle there; rather they located the vehicle and the intersection of County Roads 900 North and 1500 West where the driver was later arrested on several alcohol-related charges as well as a charge of possession of marijuana.
Darryl Wayne Barber, 38, Indianapolis, was arrested on charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated – first offense and no endangerment, operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, operating a vehicle with a Schedule I or II controlled substance or its metabolite in the blood, and possession of marijuana.
Greene County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jordan Allor was dispatched to County Road 900 North, west of Fry Street in Jasonville. While he was en route, Jasonville Police Department Officer Brian Pilant arrived on the scene and informed Dispatch the tan GMC Sonoma was no longer in the ditch. Pilant; however, reported it was at the intersection of County Roads 900 North and 1500 West. According to the probable cause affidavit written by Allor, Pilant identified the driver as Barber.
When Allor arrived on the scene, he observed Barber in the driver’s seat, slumped over and moving his head around with his eyes closed, according to the probable cause affidavit. Upon getting Barber’s attention, Allor noticed he had slurred speech and droopy eyelids.
Barber was asked to exit the vehicle and upon exit, Allor detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. When asked where the marijuana was located in the vehicle, Barber alleged he did not smoke the drug; however, he said he had just dropped his brother off stating his brother must have smoked it. Barber alleged he had smoked methamphetamine earlier in the day.
Barber consented to a search of his vehicle, which returned a small blue zipped pouch containing a white hand-rolled cigarette with green plant-like material inside. The green plant-like material, according to the probable cause affidavit, later field-tested positive for marijuana.
Barber consented to and failed a standardized field sobriety test. He also consented to a chemical test. For the chemical test, he was transported to Greene County General Hospital for a blood draw, results pending.
He was transported to Greene County Jail where his bond was set at $4,000 surety with 10% cash allowed.
Barber appeared in Greene Superior Court on Sept. 19 for an initial hearing.
