Greene County Emergency Management Director Roger Axe says winter is coming and he offers a few tips to weather the coming storm

Roger Axe, director of the Greene County Emergency Management Agency, says old man winter is about to land on us with both feet, just in time for Christmas. Weather predictions are for extreme cold with possible wind and snow. Here are some things Axe says we need to remember:

  • First, make sure you have gas line antifreeze in your car to keep the fuel line from freezing up and your vehicle not starting.

  • If you have exposed water pipes, leave a trickle of water running in a sink. Axe says running water will not freeze.

  • Make sure your cell phone is charged.

  • If you must travel, start with a full tank of gasoline. Stay on the main roads if possible and avoid back road shortcuts. Call ahead and find out road conditions at your destination. Carry a blanket, extra socks and a towel if your feet get wet, plus a little food.

  • If you get stuck in the snow, make sure your vehicle tailpipe is clear of snow. Run your engine and heater on 10 minutes every hour to conserve fuel. When you run your engine, roll your window down a crack to vent and prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

  • Also make sure you have plenty of food, fuel, medication and supplies for your home.

Axe says play it safe so you will be here for 2023.
