Elnora woman accused of leaving the scene of a crash near Linton
/An Elnora woman is accused of leaving the scene of an accident after she crashed a car into a power pole south of Linton in mid-June. She has been summoned to appear in court later this month.
Aryanna L. Shands, 24, Elnora, has been summoned to appear in Greene Superior Court on August 31 for an initial hearing as a result of an investigation by Deputy Alan Jackson of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.
Deputy Jackson was dispatched to an accident around 8:20 p.m. on Thursday, June 11. When he arrived on the scene on County Road 1100 West just south of Linton, he found a tan 2000 Mazda Protégé wrecked on the west side of the road. The car was registered to an Elnora man but there was no driver to be found.
Deputy Jackson talked to witnesses in the area. A couple said the driver hit and damaged a power pole then ran off the road. They described the driver as a woman in her 30s with curly red hair in a ponytail. They said the driver used one of their cell phones to contact a family member. They said a red pickup truck then arrived and picked up the driver.
The Mazda was towed from the scene and REMC was contacted to make repairs to their power pole.
Deputy Jackson was able to contact the family member the driver called. The deputy was then able to identify the driver as Shands. The family member said they picked her up and they would take care of the Mazda the next day.
Deputy Jackson said Shands failed to notify law enforcement of the crash, and didn’t notify REMC of the damage to their pole.
A records check showed at the time of the crash, Shands had a suspended license.
Shands is facing a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of an accident, a Class B misdemeanor.
