Driver extricated then airlifted to Indy after I-69 crash early Sunday morning

The driver of a semi-tractor pulling a loaded box trailer involved in a one-vehicle crash on I-69 early Sunday morning was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated before he was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital.

Deputy Camron Frye of the Greene County Sheriff's Department said deputies were dispatched around 4:25 AM, Sunday, February 19, to the scene of a crash on I-69 at the northbound exit ramp at mile marker 98. The Greene County Ambulance Service and the Center Jackson Fire Territory were also dispatched.

When they arrived, they found a white 2021 International semi-tractor with a loaded box trailer overturned on the driver's side in the grass embankment between the exit ramp and I-69.

Juan Loyola, 68, from Houston, Texas, was the driver who was trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency crews extracted Loyola from the semi and he was then flown via Air Evac helicopter to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis to be treated for unspecified injuries. No further information has been released regarding his status but Deputy Frye noted that Loyola was conscious when he was transported.

Deputy Frye reported the cause of the crash is under investigation but alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor.

The northbound exit ramp at the 98 mile marker of I-69 was closed for an extended period of time while crews removed the vehicle and cleaned the area.

Agencies responding to assist on the scene included the Greene County Sheriff's Department, the Greene County Ambulance Service, Center Jackson Fire Territory, Indiana State Police, Monroe Fire Protection District, Air Evac, and Ken’s Westside Towing.
