Driver arrested after Monday morning crash into a ravine
/A driver who ran into a ditch on Monday morning managed to get her vehicle out of the ditch but then crossed the road and drove into a yard then down into a ravine. A deputy reported the driver showed signs of impairment.
Amy Elizabeth Cook, 43, Philpot, Kentucky, was arrested by Deputy Davis Aerne of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department on Monday morning, October 11.
At 7:10 a.m. this past Monday, a caller told Dispatch she had witnessed a vehicle wreck into a ditch. The caller said the vehicle was banging into trees trying to get out of the ditch.
Deputy Aerne was dispatched to the crash location in the area of County Road 700 North and CR 1350 West. On the way there, Dispatch advised him the caller said the vehicle got out of the ditch but then went into a ravine.
Chief Ryan Van Horn of the Jasonville Police Department also responded, arrived first and checked on the driver of a 2007 Honda Civic with a Kentucky license plate, identified as Amy Elizabeth Cook.
When Deputy Aerne arrived and talked to Cook, who was standing near Officer Van Horn’s patrol vehicle, she said she didn’t know how she got off the road. When asked where her vehicle was, she used the patrol vehicle to balance herself while walking around the vehicle then pointing to a wooded area beside a yard. She said she was from Kentucky and was headed to work.
Cook showed signs of impairment including poor balance, mumbling and forgetting what she was saying. She said she would fail sobriety testing because her equilibrium was messed up due to an ear infection. Deputy Aerne reported Cook seemed confused, kept dozing off and was very slow to speak.
The witness who called in said she was driving to work when she saw Cook’s headlights coming towards her then go through the ditch, then jump over the road and into the yard then into a ravine. When the witness and her passenger stopped and got out to check on the driver, Cook was hiding in bushes then stood up and was talking to someone who was not there. According to the witness, she heard Cook say she was on “shrooms” and say other things that didn’t make sense.
Cook was transported to Greene County General Hospital for a blood draw – results pending, then to Greene County Jail.
Officer Van Horn remained on the scene to inventory the vehicle and process the scene.
Cook was booked in at 9:51 a.m. and has since been released.
Cook is scheduled to appear in Greene Superior Court in early November for an initial hearing on charges of:
Operating a vehicle while intoxicated endangering a person, a Class A misdemeanor, and
Operating a vehicle while intoxicated, a Class C misdemeanor.
