Domestic trouble leads to drug charges

Three people are facing charges that range from possession of marijuana, methamphetamine or heroin to neglect of a dependent after deputies responded to a domestic situation last week in eastern Greene County. Two individuals were arrested, another is being summoned into court, and a juvenile was removed from a parent’s custody.

Kaila Danielle Stamper, 30, and Bradley M. McNees, 30, were both arrested by Deputy William C. Walker of the Greene County Sheriff’s Department early Monday, May 24, after deputies responded to a residence in the Solsberry area on Sunday night, May 23.

Both are listed in court records with home addresses in Bloomington but at the time of the incident, both were living at the residence in Solsberry.

Another man, Dale L. McNees, 65, Solsberry, was not arrested at the time of the incident but is facing a misdemeanor charge – he will be receiving a summons to appear in court for an initial hearing.

An investigation began when Bradley McNees called 911 and said his father, Dale McNees, was intoxicated and throwing things around the house. Deputies were dispatched and Deputy Camron Frye arrived first, followed by Sgt. Jordan Allor and Deputy Walker, the investigating officer.

Dale McNees said his son, Bradley McNees, and his son’s girlfriend, Kaila Stamper, had been living with him but he had started the legal process to evict them. He said there was less than a week left until their eviction date and that they were having problems. Dale McNees wanted the deputies to tell his son and the girlfriend to leave but was told they could not make them leave without the eviction notice. Deputies left after a solution was worked out – Dale McNees agreed to stay on the opposite end of the house from Bradley McNees and Bradley agreed to stay on the opposite end from Dale.

The solution was short-lived as Bradley McNees called 911 again at 10:01 p.m. and said Dale McNees was still yelling and screaming and slamming doors. The three deputies responded again.

When they arrived, Dale and Bradley McNees continued to argue back and forth while Deputy Walker attempted to talk to one at a time in a garage area. Dale McNees then went back inside the residence and told Deputy Walker to knock on the door when he was ready to talk to him.

When Deputy Walker knocked on the door and he and Sgt. Allor were invited in, they reported they could smell the odor of both raw and burnt marijuana, and they noticed a smoking device on an end table next to Dale McNees who admitted he had smoked marijuana before the deputies arrived.

They also saw Stamper, who was sitting on a couch with a juvenile, was having a hard time keeping her eyes open and her head up. At one point her head fell and the juvenile shook her to wake her up.

All three occupants and the juvenile were asked to exit the residence and a search warrant was issued. When executed, Deputy Walker reported he and Sgt. Allor found a number of illegal items, including marijuana and paraphernalia in the possessions of Dale McNees, methamphetamine, syringes and paraphernalia in the possessions of Bradley McNees, and heroin, methamphetamine, and a syringe in the possessions of Kaila Stamper.

A caseworker from Greene County’s Department of Child Services (DCS) responded and informed Stamper that the juvenile was being removed from her custody and was being taken to the home of the juvenile’s paternal grandparents.

Bradley McNees and Kaila Stamper were transported and booked into the Greene County Jail around 2:30-3:30 a.m. Dale McNees was informed that a report would be submitted to the prosecutor’s office on charges of marijuana possession.

Both Bradley McNees and Kaila Stamper appeared in Greene Superior Court for initial hearings late last week.

Bradley McNees has been charged with:

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • Unlawful possession of syringe, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

Kaila Stamper has been charged with:

  • Possession of a narcotic drug, a Level 6 felony,

  • Possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony,

  • Unlawful possession of syringe, a Level 6 felony, and

  • Neglect of a dependent – dependent placed in situation that endangers the dependent, a Level 6 felony.

Bond for Bradley McNees was set at $20,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. As of late Thursday, June 3, he had not yet posted bond and was still in custody.

Bond for Kaila Stamper was set at $16,000 surety with ten percent cash allowed. She has since posted $1,600 and been released from jail.

A summons has been issued to Dale McNees ordering him to appear for an initial hearing in July on preliminary charges of possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor, and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.
